Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
